What To Expect During A New Roof Installation

It can be a surprise to suddenly have an entire crew of construction workers show at your house before dawn and “take over” your property. The inconvenience of disrupting your normal routine is unsettling, but we want you to feel as comfortable as possible. Please talk to us about your concerns before our trucks arrive on site.

Here are some general guidelines that will help you prepare for the process:

Inside Your Home

There is no way around it – you will have a crew of roofers walking on top of your house! This is going to have an effect on the level of noise and stability of fragile items. If you have small children or pets that are easily perturbed by strange sounds, you may want to make alternative plans for them during the roof renovation. Likewise, if someone in your family works late and sleeps during the day, they may be disturbed.

There is going to be a lot of activity on the roof that will shake things up inside your home. Ceiling fans, light fixtures, hanging plants and anything else mounted on the ceiling could be affected. We can walk around with you and show you what you should take down before the project begins.

If you have fragile items on the walls, including mirrors, pictures and artwork we advise you take them down to be stored safely. Items sitting on shelves or inside cabinets in danger of falling should be removed to a stable location. Consider packing very fragile items in boxes.

Outside Your Home

Early in the morning several trucks will arrive at your house delivering roofing materials, equipment and our crew. If we expect there to be a lot of debris from removing the old roof, there may be a dumpster deposited near the house. As a courtesy, let your neighbors know there will be additional traffic and noise on the street.

Depending on the extent of the work to be done, you will experience various types of sounds – hammering, thumping, banging, voices and loud electric saws. We can tell you beforehand what to expect. During the warmer season we typically start early and stay later to take advantage of the daylight.

As you can probably imagine, there will be a lot of foot and vehicle traffic in your yard. If your driveway does not meet the house, we will have to drive across your lawn to gain the necessary access. Let us know in advance your concerns for plants and lawn ornaments. Mark your sprinkler system heads with red yarn or tape so we know to stay clear.

Be forewarned that debris will be falling off the roof, so keep your family and pets away from the area while we are at work. Ladders will be set up beside the house, so let us know of septic beds or lines hidden under the ground that we should avoid. Cover fragile plants and landscaping with tarps. In case of rain, we have tarps available to keep the job moving!

Barring unforeseen circumstances we typically have your new roof in place by the end of the day. Each member of our crew has a specific responsibility to fulfill, such as roofing mechanics, removing the old materials or cleanup. We run a well-organized, smooth operation. When the roof replacement is complete, we leave your property neat and tidy.
