Tornado damage is something most homeowners hope that they never have to face. It is devastating, can range from minor damage to or all out, right-down-to-the-ground destruction of your home and it does not matter whether you actually live in what is referred to “Tornado Alley” in the US or on either coast. Tornados strike anywhere.
Tornado Alley goes right up America’s heartland with the Mississippi River valley states being the most affected. Tornados, along with their winds, hail, lightening and rain, can be so severe that even urban areas are wiped out. On May 22, 2011 a mile wide, multiple vortex tornado touched down on Joplin, Missouri causing death and destruction of homes and business. It wiped out a third of the city to the point where Joplin may simply never recover.
Tornados and tornado damage have been spotted as far afield as the San Francisco peninsula and on the northeastern coast of Connecticut. They are water spouts that start as swirling sky masses which finally touch down on land. They also seem to be capricious in their rampage, sometimes only loosening roof shingles from one home while totally flattening the next door neighbor’s home. Trees and their branches can be ripped off and flung through walls and onto roofs. In fact, the force of the winds is so severe that hay stalks can be driven into wood like nails.
Don’t think that just because you and your home escaped the latest tornado in your area that you got off scott free. Always check for tornado damage to the roof because even if you aren't missing any roofing materials, they may be loosened to the point that your home isl no longer watertight and in need of roof repair.
