Thermal Imaging is Hot Stuff in the Building Industry

by Roofer911.com

thermal imagingOne of the newest technologies to hit the building industry is thermal imaging, even though the technology is not new. The largest commercial infrared company in the world, FLIR, invented Forward Looking Infrared Radar 30 years ago for air traffic control in law enforcement The technology has made its way into television for the news helicopters, and also is used in detecting over 25 different gases to track dangerous leaks from safe distances. Over time, more applications have been found for the technology and other companies like Fluke have entered the market.

What is the big deal? Since no one can hide their body heat, even ice cubes give off heat, thermal imaging reveals what is still invisible using night vision goggles. It allows people to see through smoke, fog, dust, and many other vision obscuring conditions. It can bring to light things like blocked plumbing, electrical overheating, and more.

What does that have to do with me when I need roof repair? On FLIR cameras, water damage is visible and allows you to track the extent of a leak.

It shows missing or damaged insulation and resulting energy loss. Insurance claims adjusters and homeowners can see the facts of the extent of damage that a roof leak has caused. Rather than the old method of tracking moisture by following the wet spots with the resulting mold and mildew, a thermal imaging camera can spot the leak quickly and efficiently, allowing homeowners to make reasonable financial choices about roofing repairs.
