Depending on the types of shingles, the pitch of the roof and how overgrown with moss and lichen they are, your roof shingles can be an accident waiting to happen for anyone up on the roof. Experienced roofers as well as the novice handyman can end up sliding off the roof if not careful.
Weather plays its part and that old saw about “Slippery when wet” applies just as much to slate roof tiles or mossy cedar shingles as to any freshly washed floor. The truly dangerous decorating time is late November and early December when homes across the nation suddenly look like Santa Claus, Frosty the Snowman and sugar plum fairy dancing lights decide to take up residence on every street on nearly every home. News articles abound with pictures of homes that put real strain on the power grid system and some homes, like in Sunnyvale, CA, even have their own mini-radio broadcast systems so that cars can park, tune in and watch the lights “dance” to favorite holiday songs. With homes displays like these, Santa Claus will have to really watch out for slippery roof shingles and spaghetti strands of electric lights to boot.
