Slate Roof Repair

by Roofer911.com

Slate roof repair can save you a lot of money on replacing a roof prematurely, since slate is such a durable material. Slate tiles are made from a type of crystalline rock composed of fine silt and clay on the bottom of ancient seas. Over time, pressure and heat compressed the deposits into mica, chlorite, quartz crystal and eventually the slate we put on our roofs today.

Slate comes in a variety of colors, in grays, greens, blues, deep purples and reds. Some slate comes in mottled colors or black, depending on the mineral deposits and marine organisms in that part of the sea bed. Slate can fade or change color after exposure to the elements especially if there is a presence of pyrite. For example, the seagreen color slate mined in New York state starts out grayish green when it is first taken from the quarry. This makes a difference when only a few tiles need to be replaced on your roof. New tiles can be a different color, so if you want them to match, your roof repair contractor needs to find weathered tiles.

One of the greatest advantages for using slate tiles is their life expectancy. The color permanence has no influence over how long the tiles will last. The tiles from New York and Vermont typically last 125 years. There are tiles once quarried in Pennsylvania that are still going strong after 200 years. Imagine having a roof lasting for 2 centuries - a little slate roof repair here and there does not seem like a huge expense with of roof of this quality.
