How Do I Safely Install My Satellite Dish?

satellite dishA satellite dish can be necessary for you to receive TV and Internet, depending on where you live. If you like to keep in touch with programs only available by Satellite or if you live in a remote area where the only way you can communicate with the rest of the world is by satellite, then you are most likely mounting it on the roof of your house. You may be so remote that paying a roofing contractor to travel for a day through the back woods of outer West Virginia is highly unlikely. However, for the majority of people, getting a local roofing contractor to help you out is the best plan.

Unless you are setting up a satellite dish farm like CSETI, you are going to mount your dish on your roof. Physically, this may not seem like a challenge, but most capable do-it-yourselfers know what they know but don’t know what they don’t know. That can be a real issue when you are talking about your roof. Mounting anything on the roof requires expert wisdom or you may end up with a list of roof repair issues longer than the arm of your roofer.

The good of having your local roofing contractor install your dish is that he will make sure that it is placed in the most advantageous spot according to where the conduit will run, the influence of the weather, and the strength of your roof. He will also make sure that he walks with care and does not mess up your roofing material and create more problems. He will also know how to make sure that this new hole in your roof is adequately sealed so that you can praise the addition of your satellite dish.

Too often customers are finding themselves calling roofing contractors for roof repairs after a dish has been installed and mechanically attached on top of a roof. Having it installed on fascia is always recommended.

I couldn't agree more!  Installing a satellite dish to an outside wall or even on the ground would be much better than being on the roof.  Almost all roof mounted satellite dishes will cause a leak in time if not sealed properly.

I would apply caulking under the bracket before securing it on the roof. Hex screws with rubber washers are the best choice for this type of installation to make sure it is water tight. Caulking can also be applied all around the mounting bracket to keep the water away from the screw holes.

Your timing is so perfect, that's exactly what I said in a video I will be uploading later this week on Roofer911 about satellite dish leaks. Thanks for your comment!
