What is the Right Size Roof Fan?

by Roofer911.com

roof fan A roof fan is a very important part of keeping your utility bills low and extend the life of your roof. Attic heat can quickly rise up to 150 degrees or more which can cause roof felt to buckle and shingles to curl or dry out prematurely. The proper size of fan protects your bottom line by preventing unnecessary roof repair or early replacement.

So how do you know if you have enough ventilation? Take the square footage of your attic by measuring length by width of the space. Multiply this by 0.7 to get the minimum CFM or cubic feet per minute of airflow needed. For example, a 1000 square foot attic needs at least 700 CFM of airflow. If your roof has dark shingles or a steep angle, more heat can be created or stored in the space, so you will need more airflow. For dark shingles, multiply by 1.15, and for a steep roof, multiply your minimum CFM by 1.2 to get a final minimum CFM.

Now it's time to hit the home improvement store. Using this final figure as a minimum, see what is available in your price range. If you have two or three to decide amongst, choose the one with the larger CFM. More is better in this case. With appropriate ventilation from a correctly sized roof fan, that excess heat will clear out of the attic and you will see lower utility bills and your roof will live a long and happy life.

Keep involved and make sure that the insurance company payouts go to the roofer in a timely manner so they remain satisfied. They could become your on-call specialist after storms. Your insurance usually has worked with experienced roofing companies to take care of these kind of situations, and will work with you both for a satisfying result.
