We’ve all heard of the carrot and stick method of getting something you want done and when manufacturers and the government dangle roof energy rebates in front of consumers, they will eagerly go forward in their plans to make their homes more energy efficient.
There are all types of rebates too covering a nearly bewildering range of products. For 2011 the US Government, through its Energy Star program, will allow for tax breaks of up to 30% without limit on cost for certain items. Check with your local roofing contractor to see if what you are installing is covered in the Energy Star Program. The Energy Star program is also dependent on whether your home is already built or new construction and is a primary or secondary home.
Unfortunately, rentals do not seem to qualify for any of these tax breaks. Renters are some of the lowest income families around and an energy efficient roof would help lower their utility costs too. Landlords, who include utilities in their rental agreements, would realize a greater return on their rents if they could get those utility bills down with an energy efficient roof.Roof repair and energy efficient upgrades makes good common sense for any home no matter who owns or lives in it.
It would be in the renter and landlord’s interests to petition the government to include rental homes in the Energy Star program.
Roofing contractors are advertising roofing and roof energy rebates but these rebates circle back to the government’s Energy Star program.
