Roof algae spores hang around like a flu virus waiting for a victim offering the right environment for it to take hold. Viruses, bacteria, mold, fungus and algae spores are always in the air, unless you live inside a totally antiseptic bubble. You are always at risk for catching a flu "bug" and your roof is equally at risk for hosting organic substances.
Algae on the roof is not a pretty sight, and you need it about as much as you need to get sick. It takes the aesthetic value of your home down a few notches and attacks the roofing materials hosting it. Contrary to what one of our roof repair customers living reported he read on the Internet, it is not caused by residue from jumbo jets flying overhead.
If you can see a dark stain forming on your asphalt shingles and it spreads, you have an algae problem. Don't be fooled if it seems to prefer one side of the roof. Chances are just the right amount of dampness and receptive temperatures are happening on that side of the house. It likes the additional humidity created around gutter downspouts and under shady tree branches.
Eventually the organic growth will spread until it covers the whole roof. It's the nature of the beast. It shows up more on roofs with lighter colors that those in the dark tones. It tends to take longer to appear on the sunny parts of the house - the south and east quadrants. It can be removed using special cleaning techniques. If you have a serious problem with roof algae, we recommend a specific type of asphalt shingles or installation of copper strips below the roof ridge.
