Source Of Ridge Vent Leak in Burke, VA

Hi this is Steve from Roofer 911.

I'm on a roof in Burke, VA and they have roof leaks because of improperly installed ridge vents. There's approximately 40 feet altogether. Visually, when I look at the vent, everything looks fine. All of the fasteners are going into the rafters and the overlapping seam for each ridge vent was done correctly but the ridge vent is leaking.

The reason why is right here where the roof shingles meet up against the ridge vent. If there's a heavy downpour or wind driven rain or even a melting snow, the water can get up underneath the ridge vent and then the water will drop down inside the open breather.

Many times, the water doesn't make it's way all the way up but instead when it gets up to about right here, the water will curl underneath the roof shingles, travel down the roof in between the shingles and the felt and wherever the water finds an opening like a tear in the felt, that's where the water will settle.

What we need to do is remove this entire length of ridge vent. Once that's done, we're gonna repair or replace any damaged roof shingles and then we're going to seal the deck heavy with polyurethane on both sides of the open breather. Then, the new ridge vent will be pressed right into the sealant and then when we fasten it, we need to make sure that we penetrate the rafters and reseal all the fasteners. Again, once these procedures are done, no matter what the weather type, this will not leak again.
