J Channel

J channel siding is a special design of vinyl and even metal siding. It was invented to allow moisture to run down the inside of the siding and not touch the wood of the house. Created to conduct moisture away from problem areas, it still has challenges so consult your roofers before you sign your deal with the siding company or you may even end up with a roof replacement job on your hands because of the spread of mildew and mold.

How can siding affect your roof? Easily. Vinyl does not breath. That means that any moisture trapped inside your nice clean white exterior cannot get out unless there is a conduit that allows it to run away. So, a slight groove has been cut in to the back of the panels. However, in areas that get a lot of rain, humidity, snow and storms, that groove can become a regular waterfall that gets overloaded and ends up trapping even more moisture inside the vinyl.

Moisture that does not dry out turns into mold, mildew and dry rot, which do not differentiate between your walls and your roof, and can spread like wildfire. Once it gets into your house, your attic and your roof, you have a situation. That is why it is important to have your local roofing company come and inspect the over hang of your roof and determine whether or not it is sufficient to protect the top of the siding from water getting into the J channel siding.

Although vinyl siding is not huge in the south it's still used. It's not the best product for withstanding hail but it's still an affordable product that compliments a home.
