Green Roof Systems

green roof systemsGreen roof systems have gained popularity in the United States over the last 10 years because they work. Initially implemented, and very successful in countries like Germany, to replace the green leaves, trees, grass and general plant life being eradicated by urban sprawl, they have demonstrated that they not only repel water but are efficient roof systems for your home.

These roofs are called green because they are basically a garden set up on the top of your house. You have seen them a lot on the top of skyscrapers in big cities, but their efficiencies as roofing material have spilled over into the consumer market for homeowners to give serious consideration to providing more oxygen while protecting their homes.

To make your roof green, you need a system that is really good at stopping the roots from growing into it and is highly water proof at the same time. Add to that a good drainage system with a filter cloth, and for a smaller structure, light plants. A lot of this you can do yourself, however, it is a really good idea to consult with your roofing contractor because he will have tips and important information on the load bearing capabilities of your roof.

There are many benefits in having a green roof system; the greater insulation reduces your energy bills, your roof is slower to burn therefore increases your fire protection, and the deterioration of your roofing materials caused by ultraviolet radiation is pretty much eradicated, reducing your roof repair and replacement bills as well.
