We’ve had calls from home owners to come out and do flat roof repair because the mortar and plaster in the walls. One such home owner was constantly dealing with crumbling plaster and peeling paint on one wall of the house. He had called in a contractor to fix the wall, but within a few weeks the problem had returned. That contractor suggested he arrange for a roofing inspection with a roof repair company.
This was an historical home built with stone and mortar. We noticed there was some damage to the mortar but not enough to account for the entire interior wall falling to pieces. It did not take us long to get to the bottom of the problem.
The man’s gutters had become blocked by the leaves from the surrounding maple and oak trees, forcing water to back up under the roll roofing on his flat roof. The flashing along the edge of the roof had lifted away from the surface, permitting a lot of water to seep under the roofing materials each time it rained. All the water was trickling down through the outside wall and soaking the plaster inside the house.
This home owner could have continued to repair the wall in vain. Until the flat roof repair had been done, nothing would have remedied the situation. A flat roof is especially sensitive to backed up gutters, so they need to be kept clear throughout all the seasons. Be sure to have your roof inspected annually for leaks.
