When someone talks about butterfly roofs, it sounds like a joke. What, will they transform or fly away? These roof styles were part of the post war transformation from traditional home styles to mid-century modernism and feature clean simple designs and are still popular in Hawaii and in modern homes. If you turn a gable roof upside down, you get a butterfly roof, a wide open 'V' shaped roof. Where the outer edges lift off the walls, the space above the wall line is usually filled with glass. The center where the two sides meet is a gutter area, and in an arid climate, allows you to channel any rain just where you need it.
Unfortunately for homeowners, experienced roofers say this roof design is most likely to leak. It seems for some roofing contractors the only way to truly solve the problem is a complete roof replacement. And they don’t mean just replacing the roof covering, but the whole roof structure. Usually this costs so much it doesn’t happen. The next best alternative, is to create an increased slope for the gutter from one end to another so it drains quickly. This may require some rebuilding of the roof structure. Next the contractors will put on a roof membrane such as ice and water guard. Over the top of that, a complete roof made of roofing membrane or layers of rolled roofing can then be added. When well built, butterfly roofs are simple and dramatically let the outside views in.
