Attic wind is a phenomenon known fondly by roofers as one of their greatest allies for keeping mold, mildew, and dry rot out of your attic and off of your roof. The quantity and quality of the attic wind volume under your roof can mean the very life and breath of your roof sticking around for a long time. If you have started seeing little black and mulit-color discolorations on your ceilings and your walls, you can bet that you do not have enough attic wind and that means some serious roof repair in your future.
What are we talking about? The ability for your roof to keep a moderate temperature and reduce the amount of moisture buildup due to the changes in temperature you experience all year round. Here is what happens; in summer, temperatures build up because of the heat and the strength of the solar radiation. At night, as soon as the sun goes down, the temperature drops, cooling the hot air that built up in your attic and remained under pressure there because it had no way to get out.
The same happens in winter. All day long your furnace is pumping out hot air. Hot air rises, to the attic. It then hits the frigid temperatures. You now have a virtual tropical rainforest in the middle of sub-zero temperatures. The best thing you can do is make sure that you have sufficient air circulating in your attic. The type of roofing material that you use and the amount of ventilation all contribute to keeping the temperatures moderate and reducing the condensation that turns attic winds into tropical storms.
