Adobe homes are gorgeous. The warm rose-hued earth-encased structures stand in total harmony with the desert. Atop towering mesas against the vivid scarlet and turquoise skies of dawn, the flat roofs appear as outcroppings of ancient stones. Originally made from the earth and the few trees that either grew in the area or floated down river, the structures were quite simple.
Because adobe is made from earth and water, and baked in the sun, it was a natural way to build a home in climates with lots of earth and little rain. Roof leaks and other roof repair issues like mold and mildew were really not something that was thought about much. Beams of trees that were stuffed with clay and smoothed over for insulation really didn't have to hold back a whole lot of wetness. They were made strong to hold the entire family up. It is much cooler up there on hot nights than inside so often Mom, Dad and all the kids would stay up on the roof, under the sky - no worries about getting rained on.
And why do roof repair professionals love these homes? Primarily, it is easy to get on the roof, easy to walk on the roof, and all the repairs are simple and straightforward. No calls in sub-zero temperatures about ice dams and leaking roofs. However, if you decided to build a house that was made for the desert in a richly forested area with lots of rain, then your roofer might have something to say. Adobe homes are a delight to live in.
