Professional Roofers

By: Steven Briesemeister

Many people are scammed every year by so-called professional roofers coming into their neighborhoods and offering inexpensive services. These fly-by-night contractors are nothing more than con-artists ripping people off and taking their money, as well; their installation may be unsafe and costly in the long run. Professional roofers are constantly replacing and repairing roofs that were installed by these door-to-door roofers. Not only are their services illegal, they offer their customers no type of warranty, and often they leave town and take your money prior to finishing the job.

A qualified and professional roofer is pretty easy to find, just look around. Most professional roofers have actual permanent businesses. They are generally well-established in the community or town and there are plenty of references available. As well, most cities require that these businesses have a business license. So make sure your roofer is licensed for business.

Insurance and safety are another factor to consider when searching out a professional roofer. All businesses that have hired hands need worker's compensation insurance; as well, businesses are required to have liability insurance. Ask for copies of both these types of insurance policy, it's your right to see them and there's nothing wrong with asking. In fact, most professional roofers are proud that they are legitimate and will gladly earn your business by proving they are.

Professional roofers are usually contracted by roofing manufacturers; many roofers will only use a certain brand or type of roofing application. It's important to research and ask questions regarding their training with the manufacturer, as well as, why they chose this specific roofing application verses others.

Just because you have chosen a reputable roofing firm and viewed all licenses and insurance policies available, don't stop there with your research. Ask for information regarding on-site roofers. Are the roofers that are actually coming to your home trained and licensed? Are they actual professional roofers or are they low-paid hired hands? Find out how many roofers will be on-site throughout the job, as well, find out an estimated date for job completion.

Perhaps the best and by far most honest and sincere way to locate a professional roofer is by asking the people you know. They are usually brutally honest and offer up advice and referrals by the gallon. They can tell you horror stories and even give you cost-saving advice. Co-workers, family, friends, and neighbors usually have a roofing story to share and many times it can help you. If that won't do the trick, ask the professional roofers for references. Most roofers will gladly supply you with references and former client contacts. As well, most Better Business Bureaus in cities keep a log of complaints on roofers; it probably wouldn't hurt to check with them, as well. Finding a professional roofer is easy if you do your homework and it pays off in the long run.
